Custom Fertilization Programs
Nourishing Your Landscape for Lasting Health and Beauty
Every property is unique — from soil composition and plant species to exposure and environmental stressors. At Emerald Tree & Shrub Care, we don’t believe in “one-size-fits-all” fertilization. Our Custom Fertilization Programs are thoughtfully designed to give your trees, shrubs, and ornamental plantings the exact nutrients they need to thrive, not just survive.
Why Custom Fertilization Matters
Healthy root systems are the foundation of a vibrant landscape. Over time, urban and suburban soils often become compacted, nutrient-depleted, or imbalanced, especially in high-end residential and commercial properties where ornamental plants and mature trees require careful attention.
Standard, generic fertilizer applications can:
- Fail to address specific nutrient deficiencies
- Promote excessive, weak growth
- Stress plants during drought or disease pressure
- Cause nutrient runoff into waterways
Our tailored approach ensures your landscape receives the right nutrients, at the right time, in the right way.
Our Process:
Science-Based & Property-Specific
1. Property Evaluation & Soil Testing
Our ISA-Certified Arborists and Plant Health Care Specialists begin with a thorough site evaluation and, when appropriate, soil testing to determine nutrient levels, pH balance, organic matter, and soil structure.
→ This diagnostic step allows us to identify hidden deficiencies and environmental challenges.
2. Custom Program Design
Using soil analysis and plant needs, we develop a fertilization plan tailored to your landscape. Programs may include spring root-zone feedings for trees, slow-release granular fertilizers for beds, or organic boosters to improve soil health.
3. Professional Application
Our trained technicians apply fertilizers using deep root injection or other targeted methods to deliver nutrients directly to the root zone, promoting strong, balanced growth without surface runoff.
4. Seasonal Adjustments & Monitoring
We revisit properties throughout the year to adjust programs based on seasonal conditions, drought stress, pest activity, and plant response. Your program evolves as your landscape does.
Types of Fertilization We Offer
- Deep Root Fertilization – Injecting nutrients into the root zone of trees and large shrubs to promote deep, healthy root systems.
- Ornamental Shrub & Bed Fertilization – Tailored nutrient blends for hedges, foundation plantings, and specialty ornamentals.
- Soil Amendment & Organic Boosters – Enhancing soil structure and microbial activity for long-term plant vigor.
- pH Balancing Treatments – Correcting acidic or alkaline soils that can limit nutrient uptake.
- Nutrient Deficiency Corrections – Targeted applications (e.g., iron, manganese) to address chlorosis or other visible deficiencies.

Aerification of Compacted Soils
Compact soil around trees and shrubs limits water infiltration, reduces availability of oxygen to roots, and restricts plant growth. Aeration is a process that opens holes in the soil, allowing oxygen and water to penetrate the soil. By creating more openings and channels, natural root growth is accelerated, improving water and nutrients throughout your landscape.
An expert can determine a regular aeration schedule that can be accomplished through custom-liquid applications or mechanical means. An arborist can also determine when to aerify your lawn as cool-season grasses and warm-season grasses require different treatments during the growing season.

Mauget Systemic Injection Systems
Mauget systemic injections are important tools that help care for the greens on your property, keeping them healthy and beautiful for years to come. Each year, common threats such as pests can damage the trunk and limbs of trees, preventing new growth and causing serious damage. Systemic tree injections apply pesticides directly into the body of the tree to spread protection from within, minimizing the likelihood of treatments becoming dispersed from the elements.
A Certified Arborist can visit your property and recommend the right options for the variety of trees and pests that are common in your neighborhood. Shortly after, our experts use their wisdom, tools and techniques to apply the injections to protect your plantings.

Custom Blended Deep Root Liquid Fertilization
Emerald treats nutritional deficiencies in your landscape depending on each plant’s particular needs. Both plant tissue and soil samples are taken and tested to determine what nutritional deficiencies exist for a particular plant or plantings.
A custom blend of fertilizer containing macro and micro-nutrients as well as beneficial fungi is then hydraulically injected into the soil profile around the root zone of the plants. This allows for immediate uptake and use by the plant to make the necessary corrections in the deficiencies. A few benefits of custom blended deep root fertilization treatments include:
- Quick Absorption by the Tree: because treatments are applied in a liquid form, the tree can absorb nutrients quicker than other materials. This method also helps aerate the soil, aiding with the absorption of water and nutrients.
- Fertilization Created for Specific Tree’s Needs: similar to people, every tree is different and has different needs. Custom blended liquid fertilization allows our arborists to create a formula of nutrients based on the needs of your soil and trees. Our ISA-Certified Arborists can also ensure the correct amount is applied so that your tree develops in a healthy way.
- More Accurate than Alternative Fertilizers: Deep root liquid fertilization is much more accurate than other forms of fertilizers (e.g. pellets, stakes, etc.). When applied by an expert Arborist, fertilization is applied only where and when it is needed, preventing overdosing.
