Montauk Sea Kelp

January 25, 2022

For Immediate Release:

NEW KELP FARMS ALONG THE EAST COAST TO BEGIN PROVIDING URGENT NUTRIENT SOLUTIONS FOR CLIMATE-DRIVEN SOIL AND LANDSCAPE PROBLEMS IN NEW YORK METRO AREA. INDUSTRY LEADING COLLABORATION BETWEEN SMALL-SCALE OCEAN FARMERS AND LEADING ARBORISTS TAKES EFFECT IN 2022.

The Emerald Tree & Shrub Care Company (ETSCCo) joins with The Montauk Seaweed Supply Company (MSSCo) to introduce the ‘Sea to Soil’ movement to residents and local businesses in New York City and Westchester and Fairfield counties.

This partnership marks a historic milestone in the noted ‘Sea to Soil’ movement -
designed to open channels for the delivery of valuable marine nutrients to regional soils by establishing new connections between the land and sea. Locally sourced kelp, seaweed biostimulant and soil amendment products will soon be available to ETSCCo clients throughout New York and Connecticut.

Over the past 30 years, ETSCCo has risen to become the most accredited company of its kind in New York and Connecticut, while building an expansive network of forward-thinking residential and commercial clients who place value not only on the health of their gardens, yards and properties – but also on the preservation of regional ecologies and global environments.

Ten years ago, MSSCo began establishing a network of small scale regenerative kelp farming operations in local coastal waters. These operations are now capable of providing a steady and reliable supply of marine nutrients to continue driving this partnership forward.

Why does this partnership work for The Emerald Tree & Shrub Care Company?

At a time when over 90% of commercial fertilizer and soil amendment products in the U.S. are imported from overseas, MSSCo is the state’s only certified manufacturer of pure local fertilizer products sourced from inshore U.S. waters with verifiable traceability. Hyper-local and fully traceable material sourcing means the operation of MSSCo is less impacted by supply chain challenges overseas.

The local kelp and seaweed materials delivered via the MSSCo supply chain feature the lowest transport miles and carbon emissions in their class, while providing unique remineralization nourishment and powerful nutritional benefits to local soils – many of which have been stripped of nutrients and severely depleted by record rainfall and runoff in 2021.

The kelp farms where MSSCo materials originate employ local ocean farmers and foragers. Their farms are being celebrated for combating climate change by capturing large volumes of carbon and nitrogen during growing seasons which then gets buried in the soil—essentially closing the carbon and nitrogen loop, generating maximum benefits.

“We had long sought a mission-driven distribution partner with the experience and expertise to maximize the use of our products not only as soil amendments but also as tools in the fight against climate change,” said Sean Barrett, cofounder of The Montauk Seaweed Supply Company. “With the team of experts at The Emerald Tree and Shrub Care Company we finally found the perfect partners. They had been leading the industry toward more sustainable and regenerative practices for decades and had earned a portfolio of top tier clients and customers who fully understood why using local kelp and seaweed products has now become so crucially important. It was a perfect fit for us, our missions are aligned with precision.”
